Day for Daniel 2020

Day-for-Daniel-2020

Today the Daniel Morcombe Foundation asks parents, carers and educators to wear red, educate and donate. We ask them to educate and empower children to recognise, react and report in unsafe situations.

Day for Daniel is our national day of action on child safety and protection. It is the largest child safety education and awareness day of its type in Australia. Now in its 16th year, pre-registrations online are at record levels with final numbers expected to reach almost 5,000 schools and early learning centres, also hundreds of businesses and events. It is anticipated that over 1.3 million people across Australia will hold a conversation about child safety today.

Denise Morcombe says: “Today we wear red in memory of Daniel who as we know wore a red t-shirt on that fateful day on the 7 December 2003. Respectfully, around the country the community has never forgotten Daniel.”

Every year the Foundation creates new educational resources that are free and easily accessible to all. This year, the Foundation has created Keeping Kids Safe Lesson Plans and a fun engaging boardgame called Morky’s Safety Mission to help parents, carers and educators have the personal safety conversation with their kids.

Data collected from our Day for Daniel post-event surveys show the substantial impact the day is having on Australian children. Over the past few years, 6% of our survey respondents have indicated they received a disclosure from a child. This equates to around 300 children giving disclosures across Australia.

Denise also says: “In a COVID year where all indicators suggest this could double, our special day is even more important than ever before.”

Bruce Morcombe says: “Day for Daniel is a day where Australia reflects upon the other youngsters who have suffered abuse by the hands of others, acknowledge we can do better and quite frankly, in these challenging times we have to. This year’s motto is: “Keeping Kids Safe Matters.”Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson (ABCSL) is also available as a resource to use on Day for Daniel. The Foundation created two versions this year, one for upper primary students on the topic of Internet Safety, the other for children in early childhood and lower primary on the topic of Secrets and Surprises.

These lessons are available from our website via the following link
